Bush Enjoys the Power of Silence

polifrog

Bush's silence in respect to criticism during his presidency irritated Polifrog. Attack upon unfair attack was heaped upon him yet he turned his cheek. Polifrog rankled. Even now, nearly two years later, Bush is continuously attacked but has remained silent, only emerging from his seclusion with the far more gregarious Bill Clinton at his side to offer help to the Haiti earthquake victims.

It seems to Polifrog, though, that Bush's clout has grown in recent months (miss me yet?) and would be useful in supporting conservative thought at a time when it is sorely needed. The problem, though, has been his silence. Like the frustration Polifrog felt toward Bush's endless cheek turning, frustration has begun to take root once again, only this time toward Bush'e stubborn silence.

After reading this piece by Peggy Noonan Polifrog has had to rethink this position,

Carter's presidency was given coherence and meaning by Nixon, Watergate, and without it that presidency seemed formless. Mr. Obama, in the same way, needs Mr. Bush standing in the corner like Boo Radley, saying "Let's invade something!" But Mr. Bush is wisely back home in Texas finishing a book, and the president never sounds weaker than when he suggests his predicament is all his predecessor's fault.

Mr. Obama needs Mr. Bush in the corner and doesn't have him. That's part of why he looks so alone out there.

There is a strength in silence.
