Awkward Moments

One of the most memorable moments (essentially ignored by the punditry) of the Bush/Gore debates in 2000 had little to do with what was being said but rather with the actions on stage.

It was Bush's turn to talk; he had the stage. Gore walked out from behind his podium and awkwardly invaded Bush's personal space while he was on stage. I can only imagine Gore was attempting to make Bush appear small or throw Bush off his stride. He stood over Bush lingering like Lurch in what seemed to be an interminably long and bizarre moment. Bush turned to Gore, nodded then seamlessly continued with what he had been saying. The man was throughly unperturbed. Rebuffed with a nod Gore was left to slouch his way back to his podium.

It was as though Bush was able to dodge Shoes hurled his direction.

I believe the reaction Gore was attempting to illicit from Bush can be found in the clip below where Obama was completely thrown off his game by a heckler while Obama was stumping for Coakley.
