Crafting a Pre 9/11 Afghanistan Across the Whole of Mesopotamia is Not in America's Interest.

Is Obama creating a pre 9/11 Afghanistan across the whole of Mesopotamia? New Yorker:

Even so, the events unfolding in Iraq point toward a much wider war, reaching from the Iranian frontier to the Mediterranean coast. The long open border between Iraq and Syria, and the big stretches of ungoverned space, has allowed extremists on each side to grow and to support one another. isis and Jabhat al-Nusra, two of the strongest groups fighting in Syria, were created by militant leaders from Iraq, many of whom had fought with Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia against the United States. The vast swath of territory between the Euphrates and the Tigris—from Aleppo, in Syria, to Mosul, in Iraq—threatens to become a sanctuary for the most virulent Islamist pathologies, not unlike what flourished in Afghanistan in the years before 9/11. Among those fighting with isis and Al Nusra are hundreds of Westerners, from Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States. At some point, the survivors will want to go home; they will be well trained and battle-hardened.

Bold added...

Did Obama's actions in Libya in which he facilitated the fall of Gaddafi after which he quickly left, effectively breaking it without fixing it, help or hinder Muslim extremists?

Did Obama's actions in Egypt in which he supported a revolution that replaced Hosni Mubarak with the Muslim Brotherhood but did not support a subsequent  successful revolution to replace the Muslim Brotherhood help or hinder Muslim Extremists?

Did Obama's failed attempt  in Syria to aid Muslim Extremists in the overthrow of Syria's Bashar Assad bolster the confidence of all Muslim Extremists.  What if Obama had succeeded?

Did Obama's absence during Iran's  Green Revolution in  which effectively gave support for the Muslim Extremists currently ruling Iran over those desirous of liberty bolster the confidence of all Muslim Extremists?

Did Obama's trading of 5 Muslim extremists for one America hating deserter  benefit Muslim Extremists?

Foreign policies can be amorphous things that are difficult to define at the moment but quite clear in hindsight. At some point we need to assess whether Obama is a friend of America or a friend of those who are not.
